Mercury-Free Fillings

At our dental practice, we prioritize the use of mercury-free materials in our treatments. Many of our patients may have silver or mercury fillings from previous dental work. These fillings not only have an unsightly appearance but also weaken the structure of the tooth over time.

In contrast, we offer porcelain inlays and tooth-colored restorations (onlays) as an alternative. These fillings are not only esthetically pleasing but also add strength to weakened teeth thanks to advanced bonding technologies.

Silver fillings have several drawbacks, such as the edges wearing down and becoming weak, the metal expanding and contracting with age, and the presence of 50% mercury which can corrode, leak, and cause stains on teeth and gums. On the other hand, tooth-colored restorations offer several advantages such as superior fit to the natural tooth, prevention of decay, and a natural look and feel that does not require placement at the gum line, which is healthier for the gums.

If you're interested in replacing your silver fillings with tooth-colored restorations, the process typically requires two appointments. During the first appointment, the old filling will be removed, an impression will be made, and a temporary onlay will be placed. At the lab, a resin is carefully placed into the model of your teeth and designed to look natural. During the second appointment, the temporary onlay is removed, a bonding cement is placed, and the tooth is polished for a natural look and feel, stronger tooth and protected!
